JCAA Spring Issues Forums

Register by clicking

at (303) 982-6839 opt. 3. Please let us know which of the
3 breakfasts you plan to attend.
JCAA has four objectives and a yearly strategic
plan for reaching those objectives. As a step toward reaching the
objective of "supporting administrators through representation,"
JCAA holds Fall and Spring Issues Forums each year. During these
forums or focus meetings, JCAA members participate in identifying
and discussing key issues facing leaders in the Jefferson County
School District. Normally following the forums, a report is generated
and distributed. For copies of these reports, please call the JCAA
office. The forums include an opportunity for members to network
with peers while enjoying the complimentary breakfast buffet. Dates
and agendas for the Forums are below:
Spring 2008 Issues Forums Meeting Dates - 7:30 AM - 9:30
AM
- North: Tuesday, April 8 -
Indian Tree Golf Club - 7555 Wadsworth Blvd. (Turn east on 75th off Wadsworth Blvd
into the club.)
- South: Thursday, April 10 - Meadows Golf Club - 6937 S. Simms St. (From
Bowles, go south on Simms, past Coal Mine and look for the sign to turn right.)
- Central: Friday, April 11 - Rolling
Hills Country Club - 15707 W. 26th Avenue (From Youngfield
and I-70, go west on 32nd to Kendrick St., follow Kendrick
past the tennis courts to the Clubhouse.)
Agenda Topic #1: Employment Roles, Rules, and Support Structures for Administrators
Purpose: This discussion will include an explanation of the roles JCAA and the district assume in conflict situations, how JCAA operates as a professional association, what administrator employment rights are, and what the formal and informal support structures are for administrators. The discussion will also include asking participants to brainstorm ideas for how JCAA can support individual members in conflict situations and still continue to operate as a professional association and not a union.
Agenda Topic #2:Thriving as an Association
Purpose: How can JCAA continue to meet the needs of our current members and reach out to new administrators, including Generation X and Millennial generation administrators?
Agenda Topic #3: Open Forum for Raising Issues to be Addressed by the JCAA Board
Employee Benefits
JCAA representatives serve on the Employee Benefits Advisory Committee. With the high cost of health care, developing a benefits program with provider options has been challenging to say the least. Please know that JCAA is advocating for the benefits allocation to continue to be PERA includable salary. Our other priority is for the district to offer a plan which is attractive enough to have other insurance carriers bid, giving employees an option in addition to Kaiser. We are pleased that the Committee was able to expand options of coverage to include Pacificare. Be sure to read all the updates in The Leadership Memo and Messenger regarding the change in benefits and please make sure that your staff members know about the changes. Here is a link to the last Leadership Memo which includes a video, so employees can learn about their options: http://jeffcoweb.jeffco.k12.co.us/communications/memo/2007-08/leadershipmemo.html
Administrator Workload - Tips from Your Colleagues
During the Fall 2007 JCAA Issues Forums, members held small group discussions to talk about workload and share ideas for working smarter, instead of harder. In case you missed the benefit of the dialogue, key suggestions from each group were recorded and are shared in this report:

JCAA Membership Dues Tax Deduction
Please remember that 14% of your membership dues are not deductible as a business expense because they are used for lobbying purposes. Please check with your tax advisor about taking a tax deduction for your dues.
JCAA Board Nomination Forms / Committee Positions
Nominate Officers: If you are a general member, you
received a nomination form on the pony. As a general member of JCAA, you have the right and
privilege to vote for JCAA officers and Board representatives.
Please take this opportunity to nominate members for the officer
positions up for election. You may nominate any administrator
who is a JCAA general member. Nominations will be given to
the JCAA Nominations Committee, by whom the final slate will
be approved. If you have any questions, please call Mary McNeil
at (303) 982-6839, opt. 2. Nominations
are due to the JCAA office by March 31, 2008.
List Your Committees: On this same form, we are asking
you to please list all the district-level and/or JCAA committees
on which you serve or have served for the 2007-2008 school
year. Please take time to do this, so that our records are
complete and we can recognize you for all your work at our
Year End Event Celebration in June.
JCAA Legislative Advocacy
Do you realize that JCAA political advocates and the JCAA Legislative Committee have been tracking over 75 education bills introduced just this year? Your dues are helping to positively influence that legislation through our affiliation agreement with CASE.
JCAA sends out weekly legislative updates to our members from our contract lobbyists, Salazar and Associates. Please watch for those. Members also receive timely BriefCASE publications via email.
In addition, CASE representatives meet with the JCAA Legislative Committee throughout the year to communicate their efforts, gather input on our positions, and strategize. |

The conversations are facilitated by retired members with excellent facilitation skills. These sessions give you the chance to process and share ideas with each other for addressing the challenging issues you face every day. The conversations are held from 4:00 - 5:30 PM, on various dates throughout the school year, in a central, relaxed atmosphere. Participation is complimentary for JCAA members and $35 per session for non-members.

Those on the waiting list will be notified by JCAA as to their registration status.
JCAA Leadership Experience Opportunity Program (LEO)
- Developing Tomorrow's Leaders
LEO is a program to develop leadership potential by offering meaningful leadership experience opportunities and venues for aspiring administrators. JCAA has 19 participants in the program this year. Aspiring administrators who are accepted in the program are matched to a mentor who is an experienced principal, assistant principal, or central manager, depending on interest levels. The mentor works with the participant throughout the year, assigning him/her meaningful leadership experiences.
Applications are closed for this year, but if you would like more information about this program for next year, please contact Mary McNeil at 303-928-6839.
Administrator Staff Development Fund
JCAA manages this fund for the district. Because the budget has been drastically reduced, the funding is depleted for this fiscal year. However, you can still apply for funding and be placed on a waiting list.
To apply, click here to download the form and send in your
application.
These funds are not available for non-administrators,
because they are district funds designated for administrator
staff development. Similar funds for teachers and coaches
are managed by the JCEA office.
If you were approved for funding this year and no longer
plan to attend the conference, please let us know so we can
pass those funds on to the next person on the waiting list.
Retired Members Technology Playshops
Emeritus members will have the opportunity to take two technology playshops this spring. Be sure to SAVE THE DATES. A flier with registration information and more information will be sent out soon to all retired members. If there is enough of a demand for these workshops, we will explain our offerings in the fall to include other topics of interest, such as using iPods and mp3 players to listen to music and audio books.

JCAA will not be offering this workshop series again this year, but new principals, assistant principals, and aspiring administrators are welcome to check the videos out.
